Open Question: Cost of traveling in Europe?

I have recently discovered that I have a penchant for traveling, and I have been mulling over my idea to travel to Europe for a month in the summer of 2013 (providing the world doesn't end, lol). I do not know where I want to go, aside from London and maybe Edinburgh. I am intentionally NOT planning any destinations besides two big ones I can't live without. I've read a lot of similar questions where people overdo their tourism goals and end up commuting almost as much as they do visiting. I think my rough plan is to see Edinburgh and the area surrounding it, then head down to London for a bit and then down into France and into Italy, where I will fly home. I don't know where I want to go in France or Italy (although, I will probably end up in Paris and Nice), but I do know I plan to stay in hostels mostly. Maybe I will not make it as far as I would like, but that is OK. I would rather enjoy less than see more. Does anyone have any tips for traveling in such a fashion, or a book book to read? I've already looked through the Lonely Planet book for European travel. I do plan on traveling with one other person, my girlfriend, if I can. Any advice would be great! Thanks!
